Redeem Keys

The Redeem Status option in PKeyMaster lets you check the status of Microsoft redeem keys without consuming them.

What are redeem keys?

  • Redeem keys are also known as PIN keys, redeem codes, prepaid codes, gift cards, tokens, and product keys.
  • They come in the standard 25-character (5x5) format and include both numbers and letters. They do not include the characters A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, or 5.
  • Algorithmically, they come in the following two formats:
    • PKey2009
    • An unknown algorithm whose keys contain a Z character at the end.
  • They are used across a wide variety of Microsoft products, such as Xbox, Microsoft Office, Dynamics, Copilot, Power BI, etc.
  • They are typically sold through the Microsoft Store, Amazon, Walmart, local electronics shops, and similar retailers.
  • Redeem keys have no value until they are activated by the retailer at the point of sale. They also come with a validity period, and if you don't redeem the key within that period, it will expire.
  • They are redeemed on a Microsoft account. Once redeemed (linked), they can't be transferred to another account.

Checking redeem key status

Microsoft has several web portals and apps for checking the status of and redeeming keys for various products. The following are some known examples, though there may be more that are not listed here.

PortalCovers all products?Login required?
Microsoft accountNoYes
Microsoft 365 BusinessNoNo
Microsoft 365 FamilyNoYes
Xbox codes or gift cardsNoYes
Visual StudioNoYes
Microsoft Store AppNoYes
Microsoft Office Apps (OLSC API)YesNo

As shown above, Microsoft Office Apps do not require a login to check the status and cover all products. PKeyMaster uses this OLSC API endpoint to check the status of redeem keys.

OLSC API Samples

Sample request

An HTTP GET request:

https://licensing.m365.svc.cloud.microsoft/olsc/olsconfig.svc/pin/v3/399V4-XXKJY-RDFD2-FC9MD-Y2TYZ

While this works, the script uses a slightly modified request to mimic a request from Office apps, where the id parameter is a randomly generated GUID.

GET https://licensing.m365.svc.cloud.microsoft/olsc/olsconfig.svc/pin/v3/399V4-XXKJY-RDFD2-FC9MD-Y2TYZ?id=EDE966C6-89EA-4E8D-81F5-7F5ED207AE65 HTTP/1.1
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Type: application/json
User-Agent: Microsoft Office/16.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Microsoft Excel 16.0.20520; Pro)
Host: licensing.m365.svc.cloud.microsoft

Detection in PKeyMaster

You can view the status of a redeem key by enabling the checkbox named Redeem Status. As noted above, redeem keys come in two formats:

  • PKey2009 algorithm
  • An unknown algorithm whose keys contain a Z character at the end

Redeem keys are generally different from traditional product keys, so they typically won't match any pkeyconfig profile. However, Microsoft Office ltPIN EULA keys are redeem keys that are referenced in pkeyconfigs. Some other Office key types can also be hybrid, meaning they function as traditional product keys but can additionally be redeemed as redeem keys.

When the Redeem Status option is enabled, PKeyMaster queries the OLSC API to check the redeem status for PKey2009 keys (excluding Volume, OEM, and Eval) and keys ending in Z.
